Juniper Tree, The

Sound recording, story; The Juniper Tree, an Indo-European wonder tale, a version of story collected by The Brothers Grimm, told by Jana Reile as part of The Invasion of the Story Snatchers, in Milton Keynes Storytelling Festival, in Milton Keynes, on the 17th and 18th November 2000.

Introduction to Jana Reile, by Allan Davies, followed by story told by Jana Reile. A mother kills her step-son and arranges it so that her daughter thinks that she has killed him. The mother makes soup from the boy's body and feeds it to his father, her husband. The daughter buries the bones of her step-brother under the Juniper tree and from those bones appears a bird, who sings the song of the story to the goldsmith, the cobbler and workers working at the old mill, and collects as payment, a gold necklace, a pair of red shoes and a mill-stone. The bird returns to the home and begins to sing. It give the father a gold necklace, the step-sister the red shoes, and the step-mother the mill-stone, which the bird drops on her and kills her. The Juniper tree then bursts into flames and splits, and out walks the boy.
